I was in the general psychiatric wing (longhorn unit) after a failed suicide attempt by overdose. My first two days there were completely awful. I was detoxing from my overdose so was very tired and the shakes and weakness had me in a wheelchair. I was woken up for each meal, but of course did not want any. They left me to sleep it off that day, but no one thought that I may need water to drink or what to do if I needed to get up for some reason (restroom maybe). I finally got myself up the next morning around 5:30 and was given water and a bag of chips since breakfast wasn't until 8:15. By 10:00 I was able to walk on my own and made my way to the front to get some soap so I could wash my hands and hopefully shower. The tech rolled her eyes, huffed, and told me that, "hygiene time is from 6:30-8:00. You should have gotten it then. We will get out the buckets again tonight after dinner." So I was not allowed to wash at all except with water. I had no brush, had no clue what was going on or what was required of me. No one told me anything. I finally broke down and found another patient who seemed nice and they told me what to expect. The staff was very rude and cold - which when you are there because of depression, it actually makes you worse. By day three, things were better because I had meds and a friend there, but the lack of communication between staff was just awful. I had to stay an extra day in that hell hole because they forgot to pass along the message to the next staff member. I would recommend shoal creek over this place for anyone who has a choice. Gbhi is like another reviewer said- one step up from jail. Therapy is minimal. If you need help, this should be only a last resort.

  • I found it very clean and the rooms were roomy and hotel-like. The food was good. The staff was professional and caring. They allowed alone time and did not force group participation. I always felt safe. I had spent a few days in Rock Springs and it was total hell.

  • People should realize this isn’t supposed to be like a hotel. I’m sixteen and I’ve been admitted here three times, and I’ve learned that you have to be willing to listen and go along with what they’re doing in order to get better. In my opinion this is not a place for intensive individual therapy, it is to keep you safe or remove you from home situations for a period of time. They keep everyone under a schedule, communicate well, provide a lot of group therapy sessions (helps some people, depending on willingness to participate), provide daily check ins with a psychiatrist, and the mental health techs try so hard to make sure everyone is as comfortable and happy as possible. The main problems I’ve encountered here are understaffing (there’s so much work for those poor nurses and MHTs, they want to help, they just don’t have time. This is probably also why there is no individual therapy), and other patients. If other patients are causing problems, of course it’s going to be hard for the two mental health techs and three nurses on duty to keep everyone calm (safety is a priority, out of all of the fights I’ve witnessed there, I can’t recall anyone getting hurt besides a few bruises). You can’t help the behavior of patients much, but I’d love to see how much treatment would improve if more staff were hired. I’ve also seen a complaint about being given “the bare minimum” tor hygiene time. The facility provides shampoo, body wash, deodorant, a toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion— and if needed— conditioner, lip balm, and feminine hygiene products. You can shave when supervised and bring your own hygiene items from home. If they don’t have alcohol in them, they’ll let you use them. Treatment at GBHI helped me a lot. It’s different for every person, but it gave me the place and time to recover, whereas I couldn’t do that at home or in school. I wouldn’t have chosen to go anywhere else for inpatient treatment, and I 100% believe that, should anything happen and I needed to, I would come back again.

Terrible just a step up from jail. Was admitted here by some police officers after my wife called and said she couldn't find me. My stupid drunken self cut into my arm with a kitchen knife and I left to sleep it off in the apartment complex clubhouse. I woke up in this hell hole and was told I couldn't leave ! I was freaking out and said that I didn't belong to be there no one listened or cared. I felt like a prisoner my rights striped away I didn't give consent to be here. Luckily I was able to convince them after the second day. They are obviously just trying to get your insurance money and they don't seem to care if they put crazy people around kids etc.
